What Is Gear Soap?

A zero-trace, ultralight, combat-tested tactical hygiene solution — engineered to keep the warfighter clean, healthy, and in the fight.

The Problem: Field Hygiene Is a Readiness Crisis

Field hygiene is too often treated as an afterthought — the fourth priority of work, squeezed in after three hours of sleep before the range goes hot. But the consequences of neglecting it are anything but minor. According to published U.S. Army research, this gap is hospitalizing soldiers and costing the military tens of millions of dollars every year.

“Relegating field hygiene to an afterthought unnecessarily reduces readiness, degrades training value, and undermines Army senior leaders who prioritize preserving our #1 resource, the Soldier.”

— MAJ Robert W. Stillings Jr., U.S. Army

The Data: Skin Infections Are Devastating Military Readiness

MAJ Stillings' research — drawn from his own near-fatal experience with Necrotizing Fasciitis (flesh-eating bacteria) during NTC Rotation 19-05 — reveals the staggering scale of Skin and Soft Tissue Infections (SSTIs) across the U.S. military:

282,571

SSTIs reported across active-duty military, 2013–2016

5.6%

of home-station service members developed an infection requiring treatment per year

19,213

hospital bed days consumed by SSTIs in a single study period

395,361

medical office visits driven by skin and soft tissue infections

A separate 2017–2020 Army analysis found 90,251 infections resulting in 123,698 doctor visits and 7,240 hospital bed days. SSTIs are significantly more likely to occur in field environments — where infrequent bathing, abrasions, environmental contamination, and close soldier proximity create the perfect conditions for infection.

In 2019 alone, one service member died and another lost a leg to the same bacterial threat that nearly killed MAJ Stillings. This is not a minor inconvenience. This is a force preservation crisis.

Why Traditional Hygiene Solutions Fail in the Field

Standard field hygiene products were never designed for combat environments. They create three critical operational problems:

  • Weight: 100 standard baby wipes weigh 2.2 lbs. In infantry operations, ounces equal pounds — and pounds equal pain and degraded combat effectiveness.
  • Trash & Tactical Footprint: Baby wipes are non-biodegradable. Soldiers must carry used wipes in their rucks to maintain OPSEC and a zero-footprint presence — adding weight and creating a biohazard.
  • Environmental Failure: Liquid soaps freeze in cold environments and dry out in arid ones. Wet wipes lose moisture and effectiveness under extreme conditions.

The Solution: Gear Soap

Gear Soap is a premium tactical hygiene solution engineered from the ground up for austere field environments. Dissolving, plant-based soap sheets housed in a durable, compact, water-resistant deployment case — purpose-built to solve every problem traditional hygiene products create.

▶ Ultralight

A 30-sheet Gear Soap deployment case weighs just 4.3 oz vs. 2.2 lbs for 100 baby wipes. 10 cases (300 sheets) weigh 1.2 lbs vs. 4.7 lbs for a 3-pack of wipes.

▶ Zero-Trace

Gear Soap sheets dissolve completely in water — leaving zero waste, zero footprint, and zero compromise to OPSEC or environmental discipline.

▶ Combat & Field Tested

Battle-proven in Afghanistan and extensively field-tested by active-duty soldiers in Hawaii, Kansas, Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia.

▶ Preventive Medicine

Directly addresses the SSTI risk factors identified in Army research: infrequent bathing, abrasions, and environmental contamination in field environments.

“Simple solutions can dissolve the fictitious zero-sum game that has been created between tough, realistic training and Soldier well-being.”

— MAJ Robert W. Stillings Jr., U.S. Army, Infantry Magazine, Winter 2021–2022

Gear Soap is that simple solution. It doesn't ask soldiers to choose between mission readiness and personal health. It delivers both — in a 4.3 oz case that fits in any cargo pocket.
